These guys respect their own holy places, if nobody else's. Well the mosque hasn't been destroyed, as of yet.. And the damage was slight, as I understand it. Thus, Al-Sadr might be the force behind the assassination (and attempts) on the Hakim family in recent weeks. Sadr is essentially someone who believes his father's martyrdom at the hands of Saddam provides him just cause to be the predominant Shiite leader, despite being only 30 years of age and too young to be considered a religious scholar in the Shia community. Thus, since he lacks the religious credentials to lead the Shiites, he may be making a brute force bid to intimidate/eliminate all Shia opposition to his authority. This is not beyond the pale ever since the death of Al-Khoei several months ago by Al-Sadr supporters. slate.msn.com It could also be that Al-Sadr is acting as the "muscle" for Kadhem al-Husseini al-Haeri, who HIGHLY resents the US presence in Iraq and may be seeking to replace Al-Sistani. Also, in recent news, an aide to Al-Sistani was targeted in an assassination attempt today, escaping after his body guards engaged in a gunfight with 10 assassins. ptd.net No... I hope that you're right, but I suspect these assassinations are the result of Al-Sadr elements.. The problem will be in proving it to the extent that we don't make a bad situation even worse. Hawk
