Civilized societies, long ago, took the justice system out of the hands of the victims or the victims families. Had it not been done that way, the Hatfields and McCoys would still be killing each other. We are one of very few nations that still have the death penalty, others are China and the 3rd world countries. Revenge is not justice and only makes the victim the equal of the criminal.
The death penalty is irreversible and too many innocent people are being and have been put to death by prosecutors and police who have interests other than justice.
