<ultrawide band - very short range >

I think that will always be true, at least for many years. Reading the Barron's article, not sure I understand the "QCOM and Sprint are competitors" comment. I think they meant that QCOM and Sprint did not want UW in the phone bands. Having both VZ and Sprint phones, there is quite a difference in reception due to the frequency used by each. VZ (800) phone shows 2 or more bars anywhere in my house while Sprint (1800) seldom has even one bar, cell sites are same distance away. Both phones work fine and I have made tests of signal strength on both in the areas where I spend most of my time. Sprint does have a big dead spot between LA and SD and the battery icon shows a fast drop in remaining power during that time. Otherwise, the 6035 runs for a week at a time with out much change in the battery icon, even with a few calls it only drops the first bar sometimes in that time.

I suspect if UW was in the 1800 band and a Sprint user was in an office using a bunch of items using UW, it would be a real problem. Unless someone wants to develop a cellular phone network using UW by using a picostation on a one hundred foot grid, or some big improvement in range is made, chances of UW being a "competitor" is rather slim in the next 10 or more years.
