Fine, then criticize them for what they did, which was "they ran a wrong, single-source story," not for what their imagined intention was or for an exaggeration of their role in the effect.

And how can you blame them?

I can't blame them for being upset or angry. I'm not so charitable about unreasonableness, illogic, hyperbole...

with no great news-worthiness

I question that. Seems to me that the report of the findings from Abu Graib is newsworthy. Why would that not be newsworthy? And if the report is newsworthy, then a leak of the contents of the upcoming report is newsworthy, albeit reckless.
