One possible contributor to Juniper's slight first-quarter revenue shortfall might have been a slowdown in business from WorldCom Inc. (WCOM). The long-distance carrier, which was once Juniper's biggest customer, said in late March it expects its 2001 capital expenditures to be lower than expected.
WorldCom contributed 18% of Juniper's revenue in the fourth quarter, but that proportion fell to less than 10% in the first quarter, Juniper said. It was the first time WorldCom slipped to less than 10% of revenue. No single customer contributed more than 10% of revenue in the first quarter, said Kriens, the chief executive.
About 35% of first-quarter revenue came from international sources, said Gani, the chief financial officer. He expects about 35% to 40% of full-year 2001 revenue to come from international operations. Juniper saw the strongest international growth in Asia, he said.
Juniper's gross profit margins edged up slightly to 65.8% in the first quarter from 65.7% in the fourth quarter. Gani said he expects gross margins to decline over time.
Juniper's shares traded recently at $42.10, down 66 cents or 1.5%, on volume of 15.1 million, compared with the daily average of 25.6 million.
