Well, that will happen to any big company sooner or later regardless of the circumstances. It's easier for the numbers to look better moving from a few hundred million to many hundreds of millions. Once you start getting into the billions, it's really tough to make the change in numbers as starkly as when you are a smaller company. Microsoft, even if they were bullies, did not get to where they are today because of lack of brains and talent. While you are correct in your assertion that spinning off baby MSFT's will likely open the door to more competition from smaller players, they will make good money for the long term holders or their stock.
