Obama did exactly what the US has promoted in Latin America for decades, standing up for the rule of law and the institutions that govern by the rule of law against both self-serving militaries and leftist guerrillas. The "good old days" of Uncle Sam picking their fight colonel or general to take over a government they want are long gone, thank goodness.

Imagine standing up before Congress or the American people and explaining why we are fighting for democracy in Afghanistan but military-driven coups are just fine in our backyard if we don't like a particular elected president.

Preserving the rule of law is one of the crucial linchpins in Third World development. Once we back away from it, the tide rolls out in the wrong direction again.
