The Red Sox need to win both games against the Yankees this weekend at London Stadium. After all, Boston trails New York by nine games in the AL East standings and needs to pick up some ground.
The Yankees have won four of five games against the Red Sox this season and have posted a positive-12 run differential.
Rick Porcello, who starts Saturday, lost to New York on June 1. He gave up five runs, all earned, nine hits and one walk while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings at Yankee Stadium. It marked Porcello’s only start in his last 12 starts that he failed to pitch at least 6 innings.
Eduardo Rodriguez, who starts Sunday, hasn’t faced the Yanks this year.
The Red Sox will be the home team in both games.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
1. Home-run friendly dimensions
The left field and right field foul poles are just 330 feet from home plate. The center field wall is 385 feet.
The Yankees are third in the AL in homers (134) despite missing Giancarlo Stanton for all but nine games and Aaron Judge for all but 25 games.
Gary Sanchez is on pace for 47 home runs.
The Red Sox are tied for seventh in the AL in home runs (115).
2. Rafael Devers in the two hole
Rafael Devers went 7-for-9 with four doubles, one RBI and five runs while batting second in the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Manager Alex Cora said he could stick with Devers in the second spot when Andrew Benintendi returns Saturday. Benintendi sat Tuesday and Wednesday after his legs “felt heavy” Monday.
Analytics show a team’s two best hitters should bat second and cleanup. Those two spots receive the most RBI opportunities.
Devers arguably is one of the Red Sox’s top three hitters. He’s batting .335 with a .367 on-base percentage, .598 slugging percentage, .965 OPS, 12 homers, 15 doubles, two triples and 41 RBIs in 49 games since May 1.
3. Red Sox bullpen has lower ERA than Yankees’ bullpen
The Yankees surprisingly have a higher reliever ERA (4.01) than the Red Sox (3.97).
But New York’s top four relievers are absolutely dominant. Aroldis Chapman has a 1.45 ERA. He’s converted 23-of-25 save opportunities in 31 innings.
Adam Ottavino has posted a 1.51 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. Zack Britton has a 2.62 ERA in 34 1/3 innings. Tommy Kahnle has recorded a 2.90 ERA in 31 innings.
4. DJ LeMahieu has an OPS over .900
DJ LeMahieu arguably was the best major league free agent addition this past offseason. New York signed him for two years, $24 million.
He’ll start at second base for the American League in the All-Star Game. He’s batting .336 with a .385 on-base percentage, .522 slugging percentage, .906 OPS, 12 homers, 16 doubles, two triples and 54 RBIs.
5. Steven Wright has dominated vs. the Yankees
Steven Wright could toss some important innings in relief both Saturday and Sunday. He’s 5-1 with a 1.95 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and .177 batting average against in seven outings (four starts) in his career vs. New York.

Rafael Devers will bat second in the order Saturday when the Red Sox and Yankees play the first of two games in London.
The AL East rivals meet at 1:10 p.m., eastern at London Stadium. The game is on FOX. Boston trails New York by nine games in the standings.
Devers went 7-for-9 with four doubles, one RBI and five runs while batting second Tuesday and Wednesday with Andrew Benintendi sidelined because of “heavy legs.”
Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday he might stick with Devers as the No. 2 hitter when Benintendi returned Saturday.
Benintendi is batting fifth vs. the Yankees.
Analytics show a team’s two best hitters should bat second and cleanup. Those two spots receive the most RBI opportunities. J.D. Martinez is batting cleanup. Xander Bogaerts is in the three hole.
Devers is batting .335 with a .367 on-base percentage, .598 slugging percentage, .965 OPS, 12 homers, 15 doubles, two triples and 41 RBIs in 49 games since May 1.

The Red Sox announced left-handed pitcher Brian Johnson has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 27) “with a non-baseball related medical matter that was discovered during routine testing by the club’s medical staff."
Johnson is expected to return this season, per a club release.
The Red Sox activated Hector Velázquez who was on the injured list with low back strain.
Johnson took over the fifth spot in the starting rotation after being activated from the IL on June 14. He spent 61 games on the injured list with left elbow inflammation.
Sam Travis will be Boston’s 26th man during the London Series this weekend.

Two prominent Red Sox players recently appeared on a podcast with Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and offered some interesting thoughts on free agency. Lefty David Price, who signed a 7-year deal with Boston as a free agent before the 2016 season, and outfielder Mookie Betts, who looks poised to test free agency after next season, both discussed free agency with Sabathia on the R2C2 podcast with Sabathia and co-host Ryan Ruocco.
Sabathia and Price both agreed the free-agent process “sucks” and offered their advice to Betts, beginning at the 31:15 mark. Here’s the entire conversation.
What Sabathia, Price and Betts had to say about free agency:
Ryan Ruocco: Mookie is like on the brink of that. What kind of advice would you give to Mookie as he’s about to go through process.
CC Sabathia: Just to stay the course. It ain’t really nothing you can do but just play hard and be yourself. You’ve just got to wait it out. It sucks. You should be getting paid now. I mean, you’re getting paid but you should be getting paid more. You’ve just got to stay the course, man. It sucks being a free agent. I was talking about it with Manny, it’s not fun. It’s a part of the game.
Mookie Betts: Is it just not fun because you don’t know if you’re actually going to get a job?
Sabathia: You know you’re going to get a job. You just don’t know where. And then you have your family and everybody’s moving. It’s just a lot of moving parts and different s**t that you want to get settled in. We’re so creatures of habit, you get comfortable in what you do. That might all change with free agency. It’s just unsettling a little bit.
David Price: Yeah. Being real close with James Shields and him going through his free agency, he was like, ‘Bro, this sucks.’ And then I went through it, and it sucks.
Betts: It’s just the uncertainty.
Sabathia: And you have in your head where you want to play. Wherever that is. And sometimes that s**t don’t match up. And it wasn’t matching up for me. I’m like, this is ain’t how I imagined this s**t to go.

The Brewers demoted former Red Sox infielder Travis Shaw to Triple-A on Friday, the team announced. Milwaukee called up top prospect Keston Hiura in Shaw’s place.
Shaw, who spent the first two seasons of his major-league career in Boston, was traded to the Brewers in the ill-fated deal that sent reliever Tyler Thornburg to the Red Sox in Dec. 2016. Shaw hit over 30 home runs in his first two years with Milwaukee but has dropped off significantly this season, hitting .164/.278/.290 with six homers in 57 games.
The Red Sox, of course, have not gotten much out of Thornburg, who missed most of his first two seasons with the club before posting a 6.54 ERA in 18 2/3 innings over the last two years. The righty, who owns a 7.71 ERA in 16 appearances this year, is in the middle of an extended rehab assignment with AAA Pawtucket (where he owns a 17.55 ERA in seven games).
Thornburg isn’t likely to ever pitch for the Red Sox again and Shaw has regressed significantly in 2019, so neither team is benefitting much from the trade this season. The Brewers could still get a meaningful contribution from infield prospect Mauricio Dubon, who is hitting .307 with 11 homers at Triple-A this year.

Springfield native and Marlins prospect Isan Diaz will represent the National League in next month’s All-Star Futures Game, Major League Baseball announced Friday.
Diaz, a Central graduate who was taken by the Diamondbacks in the second round of the 2014 draft, has hit .287/.374/.533 with 16 homers in 75 games for AAA New Orleans this year. He was ranked as Miami’s sixth-best prospect and the eight-best second base prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com before the season.
Diaz, 23, shouldn’t be far away from getting his first call to the big leagues. It will likely come with his third organization after he was traded from Arizona to Milwaukee in Jan. 2016 and from Milwaukee to Miami two years later in a deal that sent National League MVP Christian Yelich to the Brewers.
Diaz is among 50 top prospects who will play in the Futures Game on July 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The game can be seen on MLB Network at 7:00 p.m.
Red Sox David Ortiz shooting: Police arrest Victor Hugo Gomez, alleged mastermind of attack, in Dominican Republic Updated Jun 28, 3:10 PM; Posted Jun 28, 1:16 PM AP

According to Bautista Almonte, Ortiz was shot by a gunman who mistook him for the real target, Sixto David Fernández, who was seated at the same table with the former baseball star on the night of June 9, and the attempted murder was ordered from the United States by Victor Hugo Gomez, Fernández's cousin and an associate of Mexico's Gulf Cartel. Police in the Dominican Republic have arrested Victor Hugo Gomez, the alleged mastermind of the attack earlier this month that left Red Sox legend David Ortiz with a gunshot wound to the lower back, authorities announced Friday.

The 43-year-old was transported to Boston by air ambulance a day after the shooting and has been recovering at Mass. General Hospital for the last few weeks.
Gomez is at least the 12th suspect arrested in the shooting, which was ruled a case of mistaken identity last week. Dominican attorney general Jean Alain Rodriguez said Ortiz was not the intended target of the attack and that the target was Gomez’s cousin, Sixto David Fernandez, who was sitting at the same table.

Ortiz was taken out of the intensive care unit at Mass. General over the weekend and remains in the hospital. A timetable for his release is not yet known.

Red Sox outfield prospect Jarren Duran will be Boston’s lone representative in next month’s All-Star Futures Game, the league announced Friday.
Duran, who is currently ranked by SoxProspects.com as the third-best prospect in the system, will represent the American League team on July 7 in Cleveland. The Futures Game format switched this season, as the American League will now face the National League after years of a USA vs. World matchup.
Duran got off to a monster start at Hi-A Salem, hitting .387/.456/.543 with four homers and 18 steals in 50 games before being promoted to AA Portland on June 3. He has struggled with the SeaDogs, hitting .207/.286/.268 in 21 games.
Duran was Boston’s seventh-round pick in the 2018 draft out of Long Beach State University.
Right-hander Bryan Mata represented the Sox in the Futures Game last year. Past Sox representatives over the last five years include Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi, Yoan Moncada, Manuel Margot and Henry Owens.
The Futures Game will be played July 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Progressive Field. The game has been shortened to seven innings this year.

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are set to take the international stage this weekend with their London Series. But as they head to Great Britain, an American treasure has stepped up to try and bring some peace to one of sports’ most historic rivalries.
On Thursday, “Sesame Street” put out a video featuring Big Bird, along with Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
. @BigBird is teaching the @Yankees and @RedSox that respect is a home run! #RespectBringsUsTogether pic.twitter.com/0bcGa5yKoa
— Sesame Street (@sesamestreet) June 27, 2019 Boone and Cora open up with some corny banter pandering to some stereotypes around their fan bases, including pizza, corn chowder and the number of championships won. Fortunately, Big Bird shows up to stop the fighting and take the attention away from the canned delivery of Boon end Cora’s lines.
Get Red Sox gear at Fanatics, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Amazon and the MLB Shop.Get Red Sox 2019 game tickets at StubHub, SeatGeek and Ticketmaster. “Wouldn’t it be ‘wicked cool’ if you ‘forget about it’ and be kind and respect each other?” Big Bird asks the managers in a green screen-ed baseball clubhouse.
Big Bird then launches into an anecdote about how -- even though he and fellow Sesame Street resident Mr. Snuffaluffagus try really hard when they play against each other -- they’re still friends in the end. This led to by far the best exchange between Boone and Cora.
Boone: “Mr. Snuffaluffagus?”
Cora: “I think he plays for the Dodgers.”
The Red Sox are playing two “home games” in London this weekend against the Yankees, Saturday at 1:10 p.m. EST and Sunday at 10:10 a.m. EST.
Hopefully for both sides, Big Bird’s message sinks in and prevents any bench-clearing brawls. The last thing the feathered friend wants to see is an international incident.
