It was the rapid change in the technology space which led to Bill Gates to a real understanding of how inefficient the free-market sector can be in comparison with government - with huge amounts of capital lavished on dead-ends and trivia while leaving pressing real problems wholly unaddressed. People working in most industries don't have to same opportunity to be seriously wrong quite so often and with the same devastating destruction of capital and people's lives as those in the tech industry - nor so lavishly rewarded equally for ephemeral trivia or society changing ways of interacting.
