To All:

Have you all seen the announcements from Worldgate? They supposedly have a technology that enables a person to use the Web over cable lines using their TV. They have some big backers including Citicorp, Motorola, and Cablevision. Supposedly began a limited test in October with some cable operators. Today's announcement mentioned their new investor group, but the piece also mentions that they anticipate a full scale roll-out this quarter. Their service will supposed cost $4.95/month (does not say it is unlimited), and is supposed to operate at about "100,000 bits per second, three times as fast as conventional modems." Excuse my ignorance, but is 100,000 bits tranlate into 100 kilobytes? I know the number corresponds, but the use of bits vs. bytes confuses me. Anyway, for those who read their news off the web, perhaps someone can post this. Is should be able to be accessed off of Motorola. What is also not clear, is whether the so-called technology is just enabling people to surf on TV AFTER cable systems have done the necessary upgrades or whether their techology enables current cable sytems (sounds doubtful) to be used for accessing the web.
