knighty, excess insulin stimulates the enzyme that creates cholesterol, so folks with eleveated insulin tend to have elevated cholesterol.
remember, about half of all people admitted to hospitals with heart attacks have "normal" cholesterol, so it isn't a very good measure measure of health. i think i read about 25% have no traditional symptom whatsoever. however, it is an excellent measure of pharma profits as that is something they can control (vis the use of statins).
something to note about statins. i understand they increases arachidonic acid, the substrate for pro inflammatory eicosanoids. this actually makes statins pretty dangerous in their own right.
"The arachidonic acid pathway constitutes one of the main mechanisms for the production of pain and inflammation..."

now wonder statin use is up 150%+ in 5 years, with no corresponding decrease in cardiovascular mortality.
the best drug to combat heart disease is aspirin, which has ZERO impact on cholesterol. instead, it manipulates eicosanoids, just not as well as the zone diet.

note, the url has somehow screwed up the formatting from here on...
my tg/hdl ratio was under 0.80 last year, which is pretty close to optimal. i want to say my tg was around 38 or some such. i've read testimonials were tg levels have dropped from 538 to 19 using the zone diet + fish oil. fish oil also tends to reduce tg values and i don't think i was taking fish oil then.
drsears.com;
no wonder the harvard doctors over at the joslin diabetes center recommend a diet almost identical to dr. sears' zone diet.
i've done the exercise thing with both a good diet and a bad diet and i can tell you that diet is more important than exercise. dr sears claims it is 80/20 diet and i think that's about right. i hate to use the word, but they are synergistic. exercise never made enjoy running, but diet did, so i exercise more. which is more important, the diet or the exercise i do because of the diet?
manuel uribe is a prime example. he can't get out of bed and his blood work is amazing for a healthy guy, let alone an 42 year old 800+ lb man.

resting heart rate: 56 (2 beats more than me, but i'm down from 80 early last year and still dropping) blood pressure: 110/60 calories ingested per day: ~2000 (down from 30,000+) lost weight 418 lbs (diet started in jan, 2006)
my friend said he saw manuel on tv and said he found manuel's positive and upbeat attitude to be remarkable.
418 lbs in 20 months is no joke. in about 4 years, manuel will weigh about 250 lbs and he will easily maintain his weight loss. he's feeling great losing the weight, just like i did. he felt miserable, depressed and hungry gaining the weight.
24 gold medals is no joke. 33 year old 5 time olympic medalist is no joke. 41 year old olympian silver medalist (edged out of a gold by 1/100th of a second) is no joke. most prolific olympic athlete in history - up until a few days ago, anyway is no joke (jenny thompson). coming out of nowhere to move from from 25th to 5th (and falling twice, to boot) in the tour de france is no joke. |
