Hi Kumar, it's more than that. It's a blow which Schröder will find difficult to recover from. Northrhine-Westphalia (NRW) is Germany's most populous state - 18 million citizens - and has been governed by Social Democrats for 39 consecutive years. Finally it has become obvious how deep Schröder's party SPD has dropped in polls, currently below 30% nationally. The early election is his last joker. The SPD tries to exploit that as a person Schröder is still more popular than his challenger, Mrs. Angela Merkel. But yesterday's result could mark the beginning of the end of Schröder's government. It's the last "red-green" one in Germany. Schröder and Fischer are considered to be affiliated with the "'68 movement", the student protest generation who had been successful in its planned "march through the institutions". One commentator called the NRW defeat the beginning of the exodus of the '68ers from the institutions.
