Sun Microsystems Receives Award for 'Most
Innovative Internet Technology' At ISP Forum in Cannes, France
PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of the pioneering role it has played in building the infrastructure
of today's Internet, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news), received the award for ''Most Innovative Internet
Technology'' at the 1998 ISP Awards held at the ISP Forum Conference, a leading technology conference for Internet Service
Providers held last week in Cannes, France.
The award highlights Sun's role as the creator of Java(TM) technology, the widely used software platform that enables
applications to run across a host of computing platforms and across the Internet and intranets. Sun's reliable, scalable
Solaris(TM) technology-based servers -- including the high performance, carrier-grade Netra(TM) t 1125 server that brings
the quality and reliability of the telco central office to ISPs' commercial computing environments -- are used by Internet service
providers around the world to run Java-technology applications.
''This prestigious award reinforces the reasons why ISPs and IP carriers continue to turn to Sun to leverage key technologies
for developing, managing and delivering innovative new services to business and residential communities,'' said Kelvin Rowlette,
director of IP Network Services at Sun, who accepted the award. ''Today's service providers are using Java technology to
web-enable e-commerce and customer care, integrate their PSTN AIN and IP networks utilizing JAIN (Java Advanced
Intelligent Network) and to provide the middleware required to dynamically bill for and manage these new services.''
The ISP award came on the same day that Sun announced its Solaris 7 product line, led by an enhanced 64-bit version of its
Solaris operating environment, providing higher performance but complete compatibility with the previous 32-bit version of the
Solaris operating environment. Also new is the Solaris ISP Server, a modular system extension of the base Solaris 7 operating
environment with special capabilities for Internet service providers.
Sun's award came in response to the question, ''Which company has developed the most exciting and innovative technology to
progress the competitiveness and revenue growth of Internet service providers?''
The Oct. 27 ISP Awards Ceremony was sponsored by Communications Week International, Total Telecom and Newbridge
Networks. Winners in three categories were selected from votes cast over the Web before the show and by delegates at the
ISP Forum in Cannes. Other winners were UUNet for ''Best Contribution to the ISP Industry'' and Dixons Group for ''Most
Innovative Service Provider.''
