Nokia has today made a series of games related announcements at E3 Expo 2001 (May 17-19) held in Los Angeles.

Nokia is again showing its commitment to the games industry by its presence at the world's largest game event for the 2nd year in a row. The company announced new entertainment content developed for the Nokia 9210 Communicator and new licensing agreements with games developers for the Nokia Mobile Entertainment Service. Nokia also demonstrated a wide range of mobile games and the Nokia Media Terminal, a recently launched home entertainment platform. A new website dedicated to the support of developers of games for the Nokia Media Terminal was also opened in conjunction with the exhibition.

Mobile games are bringing an entirely new dimension to the games arena, providing people with the freedom to play almost anywhere with almost anyone. Games are an integral part of our offering across our product range and have been a part of the Nokia user experience since 1997. We look forward to continue working with the games developer community to bring exciting entertainment content to mobile users,'' said Ilkka Raiskinen, Vice President, Mobile Applications and Services, Nokia Mobile Phones.

Nokia introduced two new games developed for the Nokia 9210 Communicator and specially optimized for its high-resolution color screen and the Symbian operating platform. The Mobile Soccer game, developed by Kuju Entertainment is the second published add-on game for the newest Nokia Communicator. The second announced game for the Nokia 9210 Communicator is the Golf game, developed and published by Rage Software plc. Owners of the Nokia 9210 Communicator will be able to download both games from Club Nokia. Both games are scheduled to be available during the 2nd half of 2001.

Nokia Home Communications announced the launch of a new website, ostdev.net, dedicated to support developers creating content for the Nokia Media Terminal, an innovative home infotainment device. Ostdev.net is run in collaboration with US-based Collabnet and will feature development tools such as source code, documentation, examples and tutorials, and project hosting related to the OST (Open Standards Terminal) platform. The OST platform is a platform for home entertainment applications. it is based on open source technologies, such as Linux, Xfree86 and Mozilla and provides a platform for developing applications for a variety of electronic devices. The Nokia Media Terminal is Nokia's first OST-based product and seamlessly combines digital video broadcast (DVB) service, full internet access, and personal video recorder (PVR) technology via the family TV. Nokia Home Communications and Loki Sofware also announced an agreement to bring Linux games developed by Loki to users via the Nokia Media Terminal.

Further, Nokia announced its cooperation with Supedo to develop games for WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled phones. Under the terms of the agreement, Supedo will develop three game titles Boxes, Concentration, and Truth or bluff. Nokia will provide the mobile games community with Supedo's games via the Nokia Mobile Entertainment Service. The Nokia Mobile Entertainment Service offers operators and service providers a continuously growing selection of mobile games developed by third parties. The Nokia Mobile Entertainment Service is a Nokia hosted and facilitated solution encompassing a wide selection of mobile games, game developer tools and support, facilitation, server hosting, and a platform for running game applications. <<
