This reply is to a question on who supplied equipment to the FPD industry and whether those companies might be better plays from an investment persepctive.

Answer #1: Japanese companies provide *ALL* of the mass production flat panel equipment out there except for a very few exceptions like Karl Zweiss. If any manufacturers of US equipment read this, they will undoubtedly flame me, (and, actually, I just remembered Villa Precision in Phoenix as one US company that sells *some* equipment) but that statement holds true for 99% of the time.

Answer #2: Investing in the equipment guys is safer than in the FPD companies, but your returns will likely be less. Chuo Riken, Dai Nippon Screen (DNS), and Nikon all make equipment that sells well in FPDland. They also all make for semiconductors, though, which exposes them to the ills of that industry as well.

Rule of thumb #1: If a company sells a lot of equipment into the semicon industry, it is a likely candidate to be selling to the FPD industry as well.

Rule of thumb #2: The opposite is also true.
