IRRESOLUTE
by Jonathan Chait

Candidate: Wesley Clark
Category: Intellectual Honesty
Grade: D

When he began his campaign, Clark was falsely accused of "flip-flopping" on the Iraq war. In fact, Clark said he favored the congressional resolution in order to give President Bush leverage with the United Nations, but he wouldn't have voted for the war itself. That view may have been naïve, but it was consistent.

Bu last night Clark offered a different view. He said, "The Congress made a mistake in giving George Bush an open-ended resolution that enabled him to go to war without coming back to the Congress." But at the time, as Howard Dean pointed out, Clark advised Democratic congressional candidate Katrina Swett from New Hampshire to vote for the resolution. (This this anecdote, by the way, belies Dean's dishonest assertion that Clark "was a Republican until 25 days ago.") So now Clark opposes the resolution, as well? What exactly is his position?
