TOKYO (Nikkei)-Sony Corp. has started producing digital cellular
phones at a joint venture in Mexico to meet growing demand in the
North American market. The venture with Qualcomm Inc. of the U.S. is
producing 50,000 cell phones a months based on the code division
multiple access (CDMA) standard.

The CDMA cellular phone terminals are produced at Sony Tijuana
Oeste S.A de C.V, a Sony subsidiary producing videocassette recorders
and the PlayStation video game player.

With another factory in San Diego in the U.S., the joint venture's
annual output capacity has grown to 450,000 units a month.

The CDMA system represents the next generation of cellular phones,
with far faster transmission speeds than earlier models of digital
cellular phones.

In addition to the U.S. and Canada, the joint venture is supplying South
Korea, and aims to expand sales in other regions that have adopted the
CDMA method.
