Christine,

The lack of connection you feel is a malady of our time though I'm sure that not everyone feels it. That has, unfortunately, become a cliche. Commentators describe our society as "The Big Mall." It is a luxury that we can choose to try to simplify our lives. We can always slip back into whatever sophistication we need or desire, even to get...waxed. Moreover this sophistication allows us to examine other ways to live. I think there was a small academic controversy years ago as to whether Henry David Thoreau was faking it at Walden Pond. Anyway, I kind of like Costco.

I do think there is a tendency to over-romanticize the primitive life--not to say that one still can't learn from it. A simple hard life has a kind of clarity to it--one knows what must be done. Such a life can also be quite limiting, never look at a Rembrandt, watch a movie, meet different people. So there is a trade. That kind of clarity is something I miss. One has to invent it, I guess.

I'm pretty tired now and am rambling. I did notice from your profile that we share a birthday!

Lyle
