Some wonder how we'll ever know if the war on terror is over.

Betsy's Page

How will we know when the war in Iraq is finished. Well, now we know how to determine the end of war.

Just ask Nancy Pelosi who has declared the war in Afghanistan over and so thinks that prisoners captured in Afghanistan and detained at Guantanamo should be charged or freed.

This is all part of her efforts to establish an independent commission to investigate treatment of terrorists being held at Gitmo. Polls don't show that the American people are all that riled up about Guantanamo. But this is the poll result that bothers me.

The telephone poll of 1,000 Americans, conducted Monday and Tuesday, also found that only 14 percent agree with Sen. Richard J. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, who charged that prisoner treatment at Guantanamo is similar to the tactics used by the Nazi or Soviet regimes.

Fourteen percent?!

How can there be that many people who think that we have a death camp down at Gitmo?

Is this just the lunatic fringe?

Or is it simply a sign of deep ignorance, the kind of people that Jay Leno finds in his walks around his studio finding people who don't know who the president is or what the national anthem is. Are these just uneducated people who have no idea what the Nazis or Soviets did in their death camps? Or are they uneducated people who have no idea what has been going on at Guantanamo.

You know, like Dick Durbin? Does Durbin really represent 14% of the population in terms of his deep ignorance and hyperbole? I find that number quite depressing.
