Greg Pierce of the Washington Times notes the downside of obstructionism.

Congressional Democrats appear to be taking some satisfaction in blocking President Bush’s agenda, including Social Security reform, permanent tax relief and the nomination of John Bolton to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

But there is a big downside to a strategy of obstruction — it leaves you with nothing to talk about except to criticize the other party. Thus, Howard Dean got himself in trouble for saying he hates Republicans who, he said, never did an honest day’s work and are just a bunch of white Christians.

Didn't the Democrats learn from the 2004 election?

They were able to stir up as much contempt and anger against Bush as possible but it still wasn't enough to defeat him since they didn't have any solutions of their own to add to the war in Iraq. Kerry was particularly incoherent as he tried to pump up his criticism of Bush's handling of the war and yet still appear to support the war. He couldn't come up with any hint of what he'd do better other than deal better with European allies. Obstructionism can drive down Bush's poll numbers, but it doesn't build up the Democrats in comparison. And they won't be running against Bush in 2008. They're going to have the task of transforming all the Bush-hatred (which wasn't enough to win an election in 2004) to some other Republian who may not be even directly connected to Bush's administration. I don't think that a hatred transplant is a sufficient strategy for winning an election.
