Your comment about Sequent being a hand-crafted machine is right on!
I worked at Sun Microsystems in my previous job (until about a year
ago) as a Sales Engineer.

I know of one customer who used a Sequent for running some business
apps. There were times where Sequent had upto 25 engineers at this
customer's site to service/tune/maintain this machine (which was a Sequent cluster). These beasts require a lot of custom tuning, application/workload partitioning, service etc etc. This kind of
product limits the numbers of customers Sequent can sell and support.

Sun with its SMP scalability alone i.e E10000 (w/ 64 CPUs) and
E6000 upto (24-30 CPUs) will continue to put a lot of pressure on
the likes of Sequent from a price/performance and cost-of-ownership
perspective.
