To all,

Police get prints with ID system, ride with PCs

The Atlanta Police Department is adding to its Criminal Justice Information System on both the booking and patrol sides.

On the booking side, the city is working with NEC America Inc. of Melville, N.Y., to build an automated fingerprint identification system that by spring will let police run
a suspect's fingerprints against the FBI's database of known prints.

Officers can use the system to determine the identities of offenders claiming to be someone else, the police department's computer services manager Jim Bishop said.
The system will also store a photo of the perpetrator and deposit the information into CJIS for future reference.

On the patrol side, the department has hired TRW Inc. to install and link notebook PCs in patrol cars to the main system. Officers can now use 120-MHz Panasonic
CF-25s with 16M of RAM to check vehicle and license registrations.
