In '70 I watched the start and finish of the Nome-Teller snow machine race. I think it was 38 below and the round trip was about 150 miles.

One of the contestants started hollering for his gloves just before the starting gun. The gloves didn't show, he took off with the others at the gun and the round trip was 150 +/- miles. I saw him come in later that day.

Eskimo. Might be something genetic, but heavy consumption of seal oil seems to offer a lot of insulation.
