Joel it took over 15 years to hammer into people minds all over the world that gold is worthless, and nothing more than an industrial / consumer commodity. Why does any one think that this perception will change overnight ? further in many countries holding physical gold is illegal and in many more countries it is not considered legal tender.

We may get a scare but for the governments all over the world returning to the gold standard will be a political and economic disaster. The only way to cover up economic blunders is to have fiat money not gold standard.

Example Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, Hong Kong, Argentina, Brazil, Russia etc. ...... got saved by fiat money.

Keep in mind value is relative and in the Eye of the beholder
