The original wealth of the Mormon community was derived from supplying the Army, who's original purpose was to subdue them. The Mormons swept in behind the invading US Army and cut off their supplies. The Army surrendered and agreed to move along further west, and establish a fort. For the next 50 years, that fort was the main source of cash for Mormon community. There was no reason for that fort to exist except for the original purpose to crush the establishment of an independent Mormon country.
