Yes he was, but it doesnt mean that he did the wrong thing. He felt he did the right thing even though it violated his long held principles because there was a greater principle at stake. He acted for the greater good as he saw it.
Felt felt (g) that nixon had so overstepped that he had no choice but to guide W&B to the accurate info on what happened. Maybe Felt was wrong as you think but maybe just maybe the new nixonians on this thread could be wrong on this one. Humor me--this happened 30 years ago--maybe youre first response was wrong???

Felt would have been chapter in JFK Profiles in Courage imo.
