That's fair enough. It's valuable to have someone who can sit back and verbalize where he sees the market in the future. If, however, he's asking for your money or picking investments then I think you want to be sure there is some supporting data and not just visions. We could quibble about details but instead we should focus on the things we know and try to learn from them.

I sometimes sense a bit of euphoria with regard to the fiber optic business. People like to cast it in a similar light to the computer boom. But I'm not comfortable with this picture. The markets are very different.

Ten years ago one could reasonably say that Microsoft or Intel could become a dominant player in their respective markets because theirs was a key component of the computer. Who has a similar key technology for fiber communications? There are so many parts and so many players that it may not be possible to single out the leaders based on technology.

Maybe the best way to pick a company is the tried and true way of looking for a quality management team at the helm. Then the technology isn't the key because a good team will cultivate solutions.
