Jeff: IRIDIUM has actually donated 46 phones to the hurricane relief effort, and according to International Space Industry Report there were over 800 phone calls made in the first few days of the operation in Central America. Loads of extra batteries and free airtime through the end of 1998 were also part of the package.

I tend to agree about the Globalstar fixed phones being perhaps a boon to emerging economies. I also think that areas remote enough to be outside hardwired or wireless infrastructure in places like China, but sufficiently active economically to justify telecom service (meaning that phone service would boost activity, benefitting both the local businesses and the government, which collects taxes on business), could even rationalize the cost of IRIDIUM service. An IRIDIUM fixed antenna can serve multiple phones, enabling service (a bit expensive, but perhaps subsidized by forward-thinking local and regional government) where none now exists.

Am enjoying your posts, Jeff; I hope Santa brings you a cluster of successful Globalstar launches in '99.
