Skipper, thanks for stopping buy to talk about Johnny. I read "Atlas Shrugged" when I was really young, and although it made me into more of a capitalist, I need to go back and reread it for the philosophical parts.
I think I was maybe the only woman here besides maybe Janice Shell who wasn't offended by John's vulgarity, and I don't think she was impressed at all with him, but I was. The vulgar posts were some of his most profound ones, actually. The url example you gave is a little beyond me philosophically--I will attempt a discussion of free will and determinism until billiard balls and quarks start coming into it, but A=A gives me headaches. Also, it pits John against Freddy Quinnelly, who I think is just brilliant, so I would have chosen something different. I thought John's poems were wonderful, because they were soft and gentle and still expressed his beliefs.
I understand Jill and her brothers have to make business decisions based on liability issues. It's too bad, because SI in its early, freewheeling days was very exciting for writers and other bawdy types. I guess I still don't understand why the coffee shop area could not just have a disclaimer written by an attorney, so that everyone was forewarned that they might encounter just about anything.
I'm not exactly sure why you feel overexposed, Skipper, but the discussion about space, population levels, the environment and Ayn Rand's philosophies was one I hope to continue, because I'm still just beginning to learn about the various ways people think about it. I hope you can come over here again soon!! |
