Disposable personal income (DPI) minus personal outlays, which are payments for basically everything.

DPI seems to be everything received from whatever source minus taxes.

If you look at the charts, it appears that 401(k) payments are part of the savings definition so long as they represent contributions made by an individual. Contributions by an employer seem to be counted as income.

The charts in which DPI is computed tell it all.

A fairly easy definition.
