They aren't when you pay for the electricity, but they are when you get paid to take it, and then sell it back when rates peak.
Even if you let prices rise and fall in real time due to demand (which will never happen given how prices are almost always controlled by regulators), these methods for energy storage simply aren't worth it.

None of them are efficient enough to be used on a large-scale basis. Either that, or even we Californians would be building them now. (At least that money would be better spent than on a high speed train to nowhere.)
