We can argue this all day. With a date in hand, iraqi govt can make overtures to anti-american, havtive iraqi non-terrorist insurgents. Terrorists cant hide forever. Is my gambit risk free? Of course not? But your opposition isnt risk free as well. Largely anti-american sunnis and shia, whether in the insurgency or not, will have less to be insurgents about if they known the US may leave. What if the alternative is a 25 year committment to iraq along with a draft at home. Vietnam domestically will look like a picnic in the park. Are we going to fill the jails with draft dodgers? I am just trying to be real. My goals for iraq arent that dissimilar than yours. There are real constraints.
