"We too went OFTEN to the keys when I was a kid. It was wonderful, now its just yuppies, tourists and gays. NOTHING like the old days. jdn"

That is true of Key West. Not too long ago my college roommate and his wife went to Key West. I was mystified by their decision, but agreed to meet them there.

So I meet them at their hotel and the first question is "Where's the beach?"

I explained to them that there is no beach. There is not a beach within a five hour drive. I open the drapes in their hotel room and show them that the water outside is stagnant and filled with rather disgusting looking vegetation.

"So what is there to do here?" they ask.

I explain that there is drinking beer, eating, fishing and diving. Neither of them fish or dive, and both John and I are long past drinking large quantities of beer. So we go out to eat and the food is over-priced and not terribly good, including the most disgusting Key Lime pie I have ever eaten.

THAT BEING SAID, the smaller keys are still a lot of fun, they haven't changed all that much. Look for family owned businesses.
