Kerry's SF 180

John Kerry recently did sign Standard Form 180, authorizing the Navy to release (to John Kerry) all of the records in his military file. The Boston Globe has found nothing new in the file, save for letters praising Lt(jg) Kerry from superior officers. This has caused many to speculate:

(1) That John Kerry is as dumb as a post. He suffered the political grief he suffered by NOT signing SF 180 during the election campaign for nothing.

(2) That John Kerry is a principled man. He knew he would take grief for not signing SF 180, but didn't do so out of principle.

(3) That John Kerry did not provide the Boston Globe with all that was in his file.

(4) That the Boston Globe chose not to report on all that was in the file.

The supposition of many was that Kerry did not sign SF 180 because his original discharge was under less than honorable conditions (UOTHC). That is still my supposition, though I am not powerfully invested in it emotionally, and I think it now will be difficult to prove. I wait to hear what my friend Tom Lipscomb has to say about it.

If it is not true that Kerry originally received a UOTHC discharge, then I opt for supposition 1. The Boston Globe provides some support for that in an accompanying story. Kerry never authorized release of his grades from Yale, but they were included in his military file. Turns out his academic record was almost exactly identical to that of Bush.
