6:39am 06/05/01 Myriad discovers high cholesterol gene (MYGN) By Tomi Kilgore
Myriad Genetics (MYGN) announced the discovery of a high cholesterol and low "good cholesterol" gene, CHD2, in people with early-age myocardial infarction. The company said the discovery may lead to an inhibition of the gene by way of a small molecule drug, which could lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. "The CHD2 drug target for heart disease is now the focus of a therapeutic development program at Myriad," said Adrian Hobden, Myriad's president. "Myriad has initiated drug discovery on CHD2 and is creating assays to screen its library of small molecules for a compound with this type of activity." The stock closed Monday up $4.36 at $70.55.
