Dan, <I hope some of this babbling made sense, hopefully Tenchusatsu (who does chipset design, I believe) will stop by and correct any errors I have made.> The story is even more complicated than your lengthy essay would suggest. At least Intel has the chipsets (either their own or those from ServerWorks) which do an excellent job in addressing most of the issues you bring up. The only server chipset I see for Athlon next year is the 760MP, and it is my opinion that it will seriously lag in 2-way SMP server performance (compared to 2-way chipsets for P4 Xeon or Itanium).
