Pat:

I've been hanging out in the USRX threads lately. They have a number of posters that have followed the 56K race closely.

USRX has the patents on the X2 technology. TI is the primary supplier of the X2 chip set. TI's solution is based on DSP's that give USRX the ability to download software upgrades to the customer premise modems. They started rolling out X2 ~2 weeks ago. All 56K modem vendors must stay below a certain voltage limit mandated by the FCC... 'cross-talk issues'. The USRX modem can achieve a max of 53K downstream because of this limit and 28K or 33K upstream.

Rockwell... First generation chip set seems to be a hardware implementaion. To upgrade ROK solution, modem vendors must physically replace hardware. I don't have a good understanding of the ROK solution.. Modem vendors should have a ROK chip set solution by the end of March.

Lucent... is alot like the TI solution. Its based on DSP's that are upgraded by software in FLASH RAM. The LU chip set is complete but the software may take until the end of 2Q97. LU has certain patents on the upstream path:

.. Lucent's chip sets will not only download information on a PC at 56 Kbits/s, but will upload at 40 Kbits/s and enable bidirectional transmission at 45 Kbits/s in applications such as PC-based videoconferencing...

MOT... I believe todays MOT modems are based on the ROK chip set... I don't know much more than that...

On March 27 the MOT/ROK/LU 56k forum group will meet to discuss test results. 3COM will be at the meeting, to keep the others in line... not just a MOT/ROK/LU press rally.
