September 11, 2003 - 9:53AM

A man who allowed a friend to cut off his index finger and thumb with a chainsaw in an insurance fraud was given a suspended jail sentence by a German court today.

The men had collected a total of 42,000 euro ($72,000) in insurance payments after claiming the fingers were lost in a work accident.

The 58-year-old victim of the alleged accident was given a suspended 18-month jail sentence by the court in Wuerzburg.

His 28-year-old accomplice, who had a number of previous convictions, was jailed for 18 months for serious assault and aiding and abetting an act of fraud.
