Re: What a HOOT !!!

As I posted earlier, (prior to the change in the Register story, by the way), AMD hasn't any competition for the next year (certainly not from Intel). So they aren't under any pressure to risk rushing starts on a new process. Intel on the other hand is betting the company that it can uncrate its barely tested new 193nm steppers, uncrate its barely tested new copper processing equipment and get volume production within a few months.

And that only lets them keep up with AMD's year old .18 copper process, not get ahead.

Remember how the bottom dropped out of the market for sub 100MHZ CPUs once 100s, 120s and 133s become reasonably priced? That situation really hit the non-Intel chipmakers hard in the early Pentium days. This time Intel is on the receiving end of that same change in perceived value in the marketplace as 1GHZ becomes the dividing line between a serious computer and a toy.
