Cirrus Logic demonstrates high-speed Internet access at
WinHEC '97 with FastPath 56 Kbps modem chipset

U.S. Robotics x2 connectivity validates Cirrus Logic's software upgradable FastPath platform

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1997--At this week's Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), Cirrus Logic Inc will demonstrate high-speed Internet access on its FastPath 56 kilobits per second (Kbps) modem chipset (CL-MD56XX).

The Cirrus Logic demonstration will highlight the FastPath chipset's ability to achieve Internet connections using the widely accepted U.S. Robotics' x2 protocol.

The CL-MD56XX offers PC users high-performance Internet access by taking full advantage of existing infrastructures currently being used by telephone companies, as well as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that are adopting U.S. Robotics' x2 protocol technology. In fact, U.S. Robotics recently announced there are over 100 ISPs, such as America Online (AOL), ANS Communications, CompuServe and Prodigy, currently deploying x2 technology at their access sites.

According to George Alexy, senior vice president of marketing for Cirrus Logic, "Today's demonstration at WinHEC is a testament to our modem group's technical expertise and underscores our commitment to quickly deliver a robust and reliable 56 Kbps x2 solution. We feel we are ahead of the 56 Kbps game by offering customers one of the most comprehensive chipset solutions for quick, convenient, high-speed Internet access."

FastPath combined with U.S. Robotics x2 technology offers PC users early and affordable access to Internet data at nearly twice the speed of current modems that operate over common telephone lines. Through a simple download of software initiated by a PC user, Cirrus Logic's FastPath chipset will also support evolving protocols as well as emerging standards as they become established.

Cirrus Logic's CL-MD56XX chipset builds upon the company's innovative FastPath V.34+ (MD34XX) telephony platform, a sophisticated, versatile, modular architecture that incorporates a powerful 32-bit ARM RISC processor along with a high-bandwidth DSP. This high-performance architecture also concurrently supports additional advanced functions, such as V.80 for high-quality videoconferencing, full-duplex speakerphone for the ultimate telegaming experience and comprehensive telephony capabilities that bring popular telephone functions to the PC. The CL-MD56XX enhances the architecture with simple and efficient support of Flash memory for software upgradeability and 56 Kbps support.

Cirrus Logic is a leading manufacturer of advanced integrated circuits for the desktop and portable computing, telecommunications and consumer electronics markets. The company applies its system-level expertise in digital and analog design to innovate highly integrated, software-rich solutions. Cirrus Logic's broad portfolio of products and technologies focus on multimedia, communications and mass storage.
