Taiwan... Gee, it was much worse here than anyone expected. Why then is is a surprise to this fellow that Taiwan would end up any differently? This guy is in a state of shock and all of a sudden sees Taiwan like a mini Japan? Quite a reaction. Nonetheless, projections were way off the mark.

INSTANT VIEW-Taiwan Q1 GDP at 106 percent

TAIPEI, May 25 (Reuters) - The following are immediate reactions of economists and market participants to Taiwan's first quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth, which was announced on Friday.

The government's statistics agency said on Friday Taiwan's gross domestic product (GDP) grew just 1.06 percent in the first quarter from the same period a year ago, well below market expectations and previous official forecasts.

The agency initially forecast GDP to grow 4.02 percent year-on-year in the first quarter.

FRANK GONG, SENIOR CURRENCY STRATEGIST, BANK OF AMERICA:

"The situation is much, much worse than anyone imagined...There are serious structural problems and...a danger Taiwan may develop into a minature Japan."

Gong forecast the Taiwan dollar <TWD=TP> to fall T$35 against the U.S. dollar by the end of September.
