Greetings from the Spy,
FROM THE TYP FORUM
It's been awhile since my last post (I feel like I'm in the Catholic confessional), a lot of interesting things have been going on in my life. Yes, I'm still working in the Cardiac Cath lab aiding and abetting cardiologists by placing metal mesh into people's plaque. I'm sorry to say it's business as usual in the good old cardiac cath lab.

I've personally seen a trend recently, (this is certainly nothing new), where people have had negative stress tests within the last year and were told by the doctor that it was completely negative. A few months, to a year later, these people show up to the ER where I work having heart attacks. Patients almost always inevitably say, " I cant' believe I'm having a heart attack, I just had a negative stress test"!

The general population's belief, which is reinforced by their cardiologist is that if you have a negative stress test, you're okay. That's a bunch of you know what!

Doctors need to tell patients that stress tests only uncover substantial blockages like 70-100%. It does not pick up on smaller blockage such at 30,40 50%. You know the ones that rupture and cause clot formation..... followed up with your good old heart attack.

So what can you do? Simple answer..... a heart scan. Heart scans pick up early plaque in the arteries. Armed with this information you can make track your plaque type changes so you don't come to see me in the middle of the night having the big one. By the way, hopefully you make it to me. Some are not so lucky.

I try to tell patients about the benefits of heart scanning so they can pass it along to their loved ones and friends. A stress test is not the be all end all.

Someday the message will get out there.
