<<Spectrum gets reshaped by Software Defined Radios, and IP packets for services.>>
Good to hear this again because it's been three years that last I heard about soft radios. Which means we can make it native right? Like building it into a Lap Top PC.
<<VPNs are the answer.>>
Precisely. VPN WLANs is the way to go. But VPN's are not exactly taking the world by storm. Guess why not? Because of 'security'. But think again. Perhaps the real problem is: With VPN I will be tunnelling through the Internet and there is not much a possibility for someone to bill me. Hence: lets scare people with this 'security' thing so that the competition do not run away with our money.

<<I just saw that the 1999 Indian PABX market was 1M lines worth $63M ;-)>>
No anomaly here, Peter. They are in a telecom stage much lower than most parts of the world. Going from the messenger boy to the PABX. We went through that long time ago.

<<Maybe India has a 'datacom incumbent wall.' There is no relevant datacom incumbency in deregulated economies. Maybe in India/Indonesia/etc.>>
Now you forced me to define incumbency: Incumbency is me and you seating at the table after eating, totally satisfied, sipping the third espresso, while a line of hungry patrons wait for a table to empty with the manager no longer looking too friendly to us.
That's is incumbency: I have made my claim for this space here, you guys have a problem. Not me. If the restaurant gets less business? Not my problem. If customers are driven to the next eating spot? Not my problem. A lot of people arguing with the restaurant manager? Ok, I just talk louder for you to hear me across the table. This is incumbency. Just exchange me and you at the table for datacom players in the market. And this, while benefitting me and you -the incumbents- is damaging to the economic as a whole. Mainly when this economy depends on technology and market dynamics to progress.
Do you know why India is that backward? Because they protect the guys at the table in detriment of the guys on the line waiting.

<<Datacom will become wireless at places where wire is too expensive or too regulated. The WTO telecom deregulation activity is what is relevant.>>
Wires are artificially too expensive. Regulators protect those owners of those expensive wires. Examples: Unbundling never happened. Data-CLECs were killed.
Talk about WTO and I wish I had my gun here with me! De-regulation via a political agenda? Not very likely to happen. What may happen is that some countries interested in the status quo -because they have an advantage in certain industries and have many datacoms incumbents- will muscle their way in to get deregulation to happen to their own advantage.

<<Nice provocative post.>>
Thanks!
