I think there might be some confusion comparing density with capacity. IBM announced they were able to make a drive with a 5 Gigabit/sq in. (5 billion bits per square inch) density. The Maxtor drive has a storage capacity of 5.1 gigabytes, which is possible without using keepered technology. There is a certain theoretical limit (as is known today) to the density - IBM's "spin valve" recording head, using what they call a "giant magnetoresistive" effect, is expected to be used to extend storage densities to 10 gigabits per square inch around the turn of the century. Either way, the 5 Gb/sq in. density is about three times the density of the industry's highest-density drive, which, according to IBM, is their own Travelstar VP, a 2.5 inch drive used in portable computers.
