I realize this, but you need to look at the religious movements of the reformation in Europe. They became far more permissive to homosexuality and other amoral behavior (ever hear of divorce? rarely happened before the reformation)
The Puritans returned to the true meanings in the old testament, while Europe went on to form many of the permissive churches that continue today. The Catholic church was the major church that was able to hold its moral high ground.
In America, because of the Puritans, we went the other way, and became a haven for people seeking a more rigid reading of the bible. Hence, today we have the Southern Baptists, Mormons, Missouri Synod Lutherans, and other "non tolerant" churches.
But yes, you are right, the jews started it. And, as far as I know, even the mainstream jewish churches are still hardline on homosexuality.
But the softening of morals that occured in Europe 300 years ago, is catching up here. Pretty soon, we are all going to be arrogant aethists, drinking Napa wine and cheese.
Doh! Too late. |
