reason i ask is because norton utilities has nice optimizing features during defrag, and even a separate optimization wizard. the various norton 'doctors' might go a long way to solving your prob.
a couple other thoughts....
i have never done anything other than letting windoze manage the virtual memory. i've heard of assorted tweaks, but most of what i read points to letting it be.
with 256mb ram, i wonder why you are running ram booster. tho i have no special knowledge of rb, i am struck by the irony of having that sort of software with that much ram.
on a related note.... maybe you have too much ram. i know that there is a point of diminishing returns with adding memory. i like to use the example of my old dell 166 that came with 32mb ram. i added another 32mb stick, but that was all the dell techs said i should add due to mobo limitations. i could physically install more, but the performance would have gone downhill by doing so. since then, i always ask before pondering a mem increase. i too have a pentiumIII 500mhz, but with 128mb ram. during a recent talk with a dell tech, i asked if he thought i'd be getting a noticeable performance boost out of installing another 128mb stick. he said, quote, "save your money".
now that was his opinion, but you asked for thoughts.... <g>.
