The single biggest difference between the situations is Vietnam received enormous support from both the USSR and China. I do not see any significant power assisting the terrorists in Iraq. That's true but perhaps even bigger is the fact that there is no hostile "North Iraq" ready to invade when we clear out. If the insurgency in Iraq is analogous to the Vietcong, there is no NVA to back it up, or take over when the insurgency is weakened. As you well know it wasn't Vietcong guerilla operations that caused the government of South Vietnam to fall. Tim
