QWEST COMMUNICATIONS (QWST) 38 3/4 UNCH. Though the H&Q Conference is winding down today, there have still been a few notable presentations. One of the must sees, according to our woman at the conference, was Qwest Communications, the rapidly growing provider of multimedia communications services. Those at the standing room only presentation heard that QWST, which already tripled its revenue growth from 1996 to 1997 (QWST revenues in 1997 were $697 mln), continues to see strong growth ahead.. It was noted that QWST is quickly making the transition from a construction company to a service company. Its fiber optic build-out in the US is coming in under-budget and ahead of schedule. Projects in Europe and Mexico are ongoing, and it was hinted that Asia may be next, but it was clear that QWST will be moving from the cost-center of construction to the cash-cow of services in the near future. Finally, the company said that the FCC has cleared its purchase of long distance provider LCI. Qwest has already seen its stock more than double from about 15 last July, but it appears that former AT&T exec Joseph Nacchio has Qwest on track to become one of the leading providers of high capacity, multimedia communications.
