symantec just released a new version. if you already have nav, there's probably not enough of a reason to purchase systemworks, which contains nav.

another thing you can do is run some of the win98 system tools to look for corruption, etc.

start|programs|accessories|system tools|system information|tools...

then try things like 'system file checker', 'registry checker', 'directx diagnostic tool' and 'version conflict manager'.

also, if you haven't already, check in device manager for yellow exclamation marks in front of the hardware components, signifying a problem.

and finally, something that goes back to my diminishing returns theory... you could always ask your pc manufacturer tech support if it's possible that 256mb is too much. wouldn't hurt. especially if you 'built' the machine yourself, i.e, ordered the components for them to assemble. but this is probably not at the root of your trouble.
