carranza,
<< By September of this year (2001) there should be about 25 Nokia customers that have a 3G WCDMA trial network ... Wonder if the test networks require licensing? Nokia does not have any infra license from Q, so its argument that the CDMAOne license applies holds no water. >>
I do not believe that the test networks require licensing, but I am not sure exactly the why or how of this, or at what stage, prior to commercial deployment, the innevitable license will be required.
Both QUALCOMM & Nokia are being politely quiet on the subject, for obvious resons, they prudently are not about to debate this in public.
As short as it is, the most detailed statement on this that I have heard from the Nokia side was made by Jorma in December:
JO: "We are in no hurry ... current agreements allow us to start shipping WCDMA gear"
If you have RealPlayer installed you can listen to the full text of his response to the question "What is the current status of your discussions of IPR's with Qualcomm, and Will Nokia have to pay Qualcomm royalties, building and using WCDMA technology, or will Qualcomm have to pay Nokia for its part of this technology?", by clicking on the right brackets beside the question at this link:
